Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

Well.. I finally got around to watching this and I have to say, it was bad__
This movie was practically a decade in the making and this is what they produced? Wasn't this supposed to be Anno's master work? I'm unbelievably disappointed this is what he came up with. It really came tumbling down and in the end the film became what NGE was criticizing in the beginning. The plot was terrible, it's like some teenager saw the original NGE plot and chose to push it even further into ridiculous territory. The characters were the same I suppose, for the rebuilds. The music was disappointing, nothing really memorable. The art wasn't terrible but some moments were bad if it were a seasonal anime, but totally inexcusable for what this was supposed to be. A few moments of CGI was absolutely disgusting if you saw it. I give it 7/10 if it were a standalone work, 4/10 as far as rebuilds go, 1/10 for a NGE work.
What did Any Forums think?

It was Anno's master work. It told you to stop obsessing over anime, go outside and to get a girlfriend. Clearly the message was lost on you.

it looked boring so i didn't watch it

Did you at least like Farmer Rei becoming a valued member of the community?

seethe, cope, dilate

I could concede this point IF it wasn't NGE-related. He ruined Evangelion, turning it into something completely different than what it began as, he really bastardized it.
yes, that's why it isn't a 0/10
Look at this list and tell me they have good taste:

>Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train
>Weathering with You
>Mirai
completely unrespectable

>make bad movie
>uh why are you complaining about this movie I made see this message here where I tell you to be a sheep and waste your life time instead of doing things you enjoy
>this is where I pretend that somehow makes my movie good
Yeah, nope

I was so fucking disappointed after I first saw it, on a second rewatch I disliked it less but outside of village kino it's still not something I'm a fan of.

You know what. I concede. You're right.

based on what I've seen here when it comes to the average Any Forumsnon's opinion on 3.0+1.0, I'm convinced that most of you aren't gonna make it.

elaborate

I rate it higher as an Eva work than as a standalone work. It fundamentally doesn't function as a standalone work

>It fundamentally doesn't function as a standalone work
As it currently exists yes, but they pulled so many new terms out of the aether that didn't show up in the previous films that it could easily be reworked to be it's own work.

I was already married when it came out and we both hated on it together.

it was garbage.

nothing else to really say about it. it had very little entertainment value.

I think it fails at both

It was hot garbage and shat on the original ending.
I liked how the original while being science fiction at least tried to be grounded in reality. The control room scenes and the logistics behind launching and maintaining a mecha were the best parts and made the payoff of watching a mecha and angel go at it all the more better.
In the third act forewent all of the build up in favor of patented marvel formula of fighting an unlimited number of disposable mooks.

Absolutely nobody talks about the scene with Asuka and Mari falling through a cloud of ten billion skeleton evas. Despite that it was likely the most complicated and hands on segment from Anno, it’s so stupid that not even the movie’s defenders have anything to say about it.

Mogudan does pretty good non-H work

It was the only good part of the movie. Maybe if it was the whole thing I could take the "it was about letting go of Eva" defenders seriously.

You know, for all of 3.33's problems, I liked that at its core plot was how there was no magic fix for all of Shinji's problems and mistakes, that he couldn't just undo everything

And then this movie comes out and Shinji does indeed get to magically fix and undo all of his mistakes and problems.

>It fundamentally doesn't work as a standalone piece
This is true, but why would you ever consider a part in a non-serial series without the other works in that series? Especially for something as aggressively self-referential as 3.0+1.0 or the Rebuilds in general?

3.0+1.0 is an actual deconstruction of Evangelion as franchise that ends in the destruction of old Eva within the text of the Rebuilds. It fundamentally doesn't work without Eva as franchise in the same way a car doesn't work without an engine.

>why would you ever consider a part in a non-serial series without the other works in that series?
Just thinking of what could make this movie good. Just imagine a comfy film centered around a farmer Rei who lost all her memories, she interacts with the people who knew her old self, becomes her own person and they come to accept the new Rei as a unique individual.

it was great, you just have bad taste

That scene is the purest expression of the dumb, smashy, toyetic heart that beats in every mecha anime and also weirdos like Anno.

This is such an obtuse reading it feels like bad faith. The running thread with Shinji in the Rebuilds is growing the fuck up. Once he grows the fuck up thanks to being around his grown-up, well adjusted non-pilots, he's able to move forward. Mari doesn't hop on his jock until he shows enough maturity to talk to Asuka like an adult and understand why she hated his guts in 3.0. His entire thing beating Gendo is being the bigger man instead of matching his childish, N64 looking ass Eva tantrum.

You'd think after 25 years, people would figure out how to cut through the wacky bullshit obsfucating incredibly simple emotional beats.

But the bullshit is the point, an occult lingo hiding the fact most people only care about Eva to seem smart with minimal effort or because they want to fuck one of the main characters.
