Stretching Ogata's plot powers for me here. Sugimoto wouldn't normally miss a sneak attack like that, and Sugimoto is probably just under the Professor/Hijikata as a melee threat in this series whereas Ogata already got roundly beaten by a mid-tier army member.

It's not a good setup, makes him feel too much the author pet. In this situation, accordingly to the rules and writing of the story so far, he dies immediately.

I agree yeah, could have just been a pratfall into the bear and you'd still have had the same setup. Ogata has never been strong physically.

That's true of basically every fight he's ever been in.

IDK I agree not a huge deal but I think Noda should have just had cat take a clean loss there and scripted it a little different to put Sugimoto in the same position. It's just inconsistent with how both characters have been shown previously, even if the Asirpa showdown is what you want to deliver.
