Depends on whether it actually is lava or magma. Lava is on the surface of the earth, magma is below the surface. A linguistic quirk of english that isn't repeated in many languages.

What the funk
I thought I'd look up lava to see if the Japanese had a word for it that was different from magma (they do) and I found all these words. I thought it was total word salad because despite being a native English speaker for nearly fort... for over twenty years, I've never heard any of these combinations of words before. Turns out they're all real things. I mean seriously "pillow lava"?
