The whole point of Vinland Saga is to show how allowing oneself to become consumed by hatred and anger will only lead to more suffering for oneself. Never satisfaction or fulfillment. Thorfinn's dad quite literally spells out the series' main theme within the first ten chapters: "You have no enemies"
Thorfinn as a youth allows himself to become a monster by devoting himself to the misguided belief that avenging his father's death will make him feel whole.
When he is denied the chance to ever get this revenge, he becomes a husk of a man who feels nothing anymore. Anger was all that filled him, and now even that is gone.
And in the end, as an adult, he finally sees the wisdom in his deceased father's words; it is by forming meaningful connections with other human beings that a man finds happiness, not by destroying all in his path.
Thorfinn's character was always meant to stand in stark contrast to the way of the Viking, be it as a violent teenager who took no joy from all the killing and war, or as a humbled adult who simply wishes to be kinder than the man he once was.

Thors' peaceful existence without enemies was only possible because he fled to a place no one bothered to raid. He went to the opposite extreme instead of something more sensible like it's okay to use violence but only when it's necessary to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property/belongings.

This is the part that pisses me off the most. You want to martyr yourself because you think that's atonement for you past actions, fine. He has people who are supposedly his friends and loved ones around and he not only fails to protect them himself but also insists they don't either. He does seem to have picked it up from father though who would rather sacrifice his own son.

Because the moral lesson is a dumb suicidal pacifism and if anyone ever comes to hurt you, you should just roll over and die and they never have to actually confront the fact bad people or conflicts stil happen and you have to resolve them somehow.

There are ways to do that right, and while I still enjoy Vinland Saga, and can appreciate it for what it is, I dont agree with its message.

Well according to Sagas they came back to Iceland just after few years and the son seems to be recorded in history. Dunno if the manga is going to deviate from it and have a different ending.

Even with Thorfinn being a fag I don't think farmland saga is actually that bad. The issue other than the massive mood shift was that it took forever. Animated it wouldn't be as painful as waiting a month for another load of nothing to happen. As long as they don't pad the anime to shit too anyway.
