Honestly, upon re-reading, Sasuke wasn't nearly as much of a prick in Part I as I originally thought. He was pretty reasonable and cooperative, all things considered. He didn't even treat Naruto any worse than anyone else did.

user, no one believed that. He was always slated to be the cold, uncaring character with a heart closed off to others after the whole clan massacre thing, I just don't think people expected him to go complete edgelord in shippuden. Guy was clearly slowly unraveling as far back as the early Chunin exams during the forest of death arc once he got the curse mark. At the very least, I think people thought that the earlier building of camaraderie straight up through the zabuza arc between team 7 was slowly making Sasuke less cold than initially portrayed and more caring towards others.
