In theory yes. In practice, often not. I really like when a genius character makes meticulous plans to work out a problem, but they're often just "smart because the plot says so". To clarify, I like Light and Lelouch, even though they're both choc full of asspulls, because we get to see a realistic plan within unrealistic circumstances. The idea that Light and Lelouch could have access to all the things they do is retarded, but given that they do, what they make of the knowledge they have is what makes them smart. I'm not sure if I explained it properly, but genius characters I don't like are people like Near and Izumi. Characters who just leap from problem to solution without taking the time to display any plan, characters who "just work". It's hard to get invested in these characters because you know that 5 seconds after coming face to face with a problem, they will "just figure out" a solution. It's why the back third of Death Note and this whole arc is boring.

I can generally agree. I think characters who are TV Sherlock types are insufferable because they're smarter than the author so they tend to just use asspulls but I think characters like Hakase and Izumi are fun since it's just used as a gag. I think it depends on the tone of the series.
