Why tf was this so popular in America?

Ryoko a best

because America had missed out on the Lum experience.

Because back then the internet was still in diapers so the proto-weebs didn't know about the cultural context. Tenchi Muyo was made for shut-in Japanese nerds but the Americans saw it as just another cartoon. It even got some female fans because it looks like Japanese Charlie's Angels

Because action and titties

i would like to watch this
the only problem is all the spin offs, and all the other universes
it does feel like alot to take in

Try the original OVA and stop whenever you feel like it

I was born in the mid-90s and saw Tenchi very young but nobody around me that also liked anime knew what is was so sometimes I felt like it was a figment of my imagination.

Sasami best girl

Because it was my 3rd or 4th anime.

Then don't try to marathon it all. Just start with the first 2 OVA series.

Does Tenchi fight any bad guys after the Kagato arc or has it just been doujin bullshit about who fucks who for the last 10 years? Does it even have an audience in Japan still?

watch the first two OVAs and the tv anime that also got called tenchi muyo, skip the rest

The best continuity is the Negishi continuity (Tenchi Universe -> Tenchi Muyo in Love -> Tenchi Forever)

yukine is such a QT. wish she got more screentime

He bullies space ships in the 5th OVA. I think that's about it.

RETARD

How is the manga? Does it follow the ova, universe or is it its own thing?

Not sure how big the following is. But there really is no conflict after ova3 ends and OVA5 was more kenshi being trained to go to geminar.

wait i dont remember seeing this. Which episode is this from?

Also it's own thing
