Ok okay, hear me out. Whatever is going on with Luffy, the Gomu Gomu No Mi, Joy Boy and Nikka is bringing up more mystery/interest in the lore around devil fruits, inherited will and lineage factor. IMO the fruit that the five elders are referring to has to be the Gomu Gomu No Mi. (The way the panels line up, and the order to eliminate Luffy just makes sense, to me at least) it appears that Luffy is a Joy Boy/Nikka incarnation? Idk lol. Was it destiny? Heritage? The devil fruit? I don’t think Luffy or any one will actually understand after Wano. Which leads me to believe we will see an encounter with Dr. Vegapunk shortly after Wano. I believe he has a lot of the pieces to the puzzle.

Right now, we know Luffy has the Gomu Gomu no mi (ゴム). However, I think Luffy's fruit is the subject of conspiracy and I think he's gonna end up with the Keshigomu Keshigomu no mi (消しゴム). Keshigomu is rubber. It's rubber that has been vulcanized and then formed into an eraser. Im-sama and the Gorosei are terrified of the power of an eraser in the hands of a pirate, since it was a power only they had the authority to exercise to that point.

Right now, Luffy already has peak advanced forms of all three Haki. He has enormous strength. But as we see, he still lacks endurance. Vulcanization is one way to provide rubber the strength it needs to endure.

Idk if I speak only for my self but one of the biggest points that got me hooked into one piece is that anyone can become pirate king and among all the pirates a random boy with rubber powers gonna make it to the top somehow with his "rubber" powers

The story was clearly always about a special person. We knew Monkey D. Luffy had a ridiculous number of special traits working in his favor.

Take away the rubber element and make the fruit special or it having a special backstory or important takes away literally all the story for me and I hope am not the only one with this opinion

That's sort of the point, though. This is clearly Luffy awakening the fruit. One awakens the "Gomu Gomu no mi" by melting and then vulcanizing their body. Plus, we already have the narrative elements present for him to successfully reform:

Gunpowder in the basement for sulfur

Bombs in the basement for a catalyst

and a Kazenbo which is conspicuously not dead.

As for why he needs the powerup, well, he's clearly not going to win with his current strength. He needs to awaken the fruit, vulcanize, and buff his endurance/stamina.

I’d be devastated if this is some reincarnation or outside influence. I want luffy to be luffy, no help, no surprises, no “suddenly learning the true history” and spoiling his own adventure, no serious/devilish luffy. I want need luffy to have his own life and adventure. I think it’s fine though, Roger pirates wouldn’t have laughed if it was something messed up like that.

I’m thinking he “Frees” himself by coming close to death related to his blood or something. (Might explain why dragon looks like he does) and tapping deep into his DF ability. To the very CORE of it he wills himself to persevere and has an epiphany.

Throughout the last two arcs I was thinking “WOW! The yonko are so diverse and creative! Their powers and imagination have an answer for ANYTHING!”

Now I appreciate the upgrades Luffy’s gotten recently, but I would like a wider range of abilities even if they’re not super powerful. Seeing UFO, Snake Claw, or even “no thank you fire!” Made me chuckle and enjoy luffy not ending things with a big punch.
