I think the big reason it's so popular is because it avoids falling into the one of the biggest traps long-running shonen tend to. Every arc of HxH shifts gears enough that it never feels like it's just going through the motions. It's not like something like One Piece, where you kinda know going in how any given arc is going to play out. You never really know what the fuck the next arc of HxH is going to be about.
I think that's also a factor in why JJBA has remained so popular.
