Griffith breaking down after Guts leaves is such a beautiful moment, really shows how flawed he is. I can imagine that rather than having a duel, they could have just as easily just talked it out and resolved things peacefully, but these are two of the proudest, powerful, most principled characters in the story, that just wasn't going to happen. You are a brainlet for holding it against Griffith here.

And you're as much of an imbecile as he is if you think it justifies any of what he did after. I agree that it shows his flaws but that usn't something to be admired. It shows his obsessive control complex and his descent towards the eclipse. The first thing he does when he loses control is lash out and try and take hold of the one thing he wants more than anything (charollete and by extension midland) and when that goes to shit, he spends the rest of the arc blaming guts for his own failings and hurting anyone on his path in his petty quest for revange.
