Explain why it is so highly regarded.
The setting, sure, is incredibly interesting. And Oscar is a very good main character.
But for everything else, I feel RoV has no right to be held as the ultimate shojo drama or whatever. In particular, the story structure is kind of a mess and the series as a whole suffers from changing directors in the middle. I mean, both of them do a good job, and if you're not paying attention you might not notice the change, but I believe great series reward paying attention and RoV lacks unity as a whole.
For these reasons, in the end I believe other classics like Ace wo Nerae!, Candy Candy and Utena are on an equal level or higher than Versailles.
Rose of Versailles
Shoujo shitters and moeshitters are cut from the same cloth. Shounen is the vastly superior demographic.
lmao
Ace is fucking dogshit bro
I think ROV definitely deserves it's spot as one of the classics, but i also somewhat agree with your criticism. I noticed the director change and imo the series became much better though, so i considered it improvement. I still also agree that Utena is better series overall. What's your thoughts on Oniisama e?
AwN is on my to-watch list, but last time i checked the series wasn't fully subbed. Thanks to this thread i looked again and seems like it's done now, so cheers OP.
Don't take the bait
The anime is also Dezaki as fuck, so it has artistic value for anime history. Utena's aesthetics is influenced by RoV.
The story shift in the manga was worse, because Ikeda started this, wanting draw a manga about Marie Antoinette and ended up making Oscar the MC. You go from a cute historical shoujo to love triangles that make you sob.
All shoujo is shit. It's literally for little girls, nothing made by women is good. Not a single shoujo can approcah 1/10th the haight of the great shounen like Joe, Kenshin and Slam Dunk
Not again
(you)s are what it desires, don't give them
I do think it may be the weakest one but also that it still has a unique charm and does its thing well.
Yeah, either director was fine to me, but I'd have liked it to be consistent. I've yet to watch Oniisama e, will probably do so soon. Cheers.
Hm I guess I get Dezaki's work for it being notably iconic. He had already developed his style and the story was perfect for it. How did you like the manga?
>Oscar is a very good main character
Yeah, I know, but this retard is in every fucking thread
What are you implying?
I'm implying that she's not a very good character due to her being carboard with no depth.
Also, checked.
Oscar is very, uh, gorgeous.
She's a very appealing cardboard, and I don't just mean pretty, the gender and class identity conflict is very interesting.
Same reason original gundum or awo are highly regarded. Which is to say that the reason has little to with their quality if looked at from a 2022 vacuum. Unless you're a delusional pre2000 hipster of course. Utena on the other hand is something special even in a vacuum.
>It's literally for little girls
He's not wrong you know
I don't think it's that highly regarded really. It's talked about as one of the great series of the 70s but that's not a very high bar. I think it's mostly renowned for its influence and its popularity at the time. That being said it's still a great show just not a masterpiece. I agree Utena is better, but it's so different despite being heavily influenced by RoV so it seems kind of an unfair comparison. Never finished Ace but from what I saw I much preferred RoV
Her gender conflict got old really fast as it was her entire identity.
>class identity conflict
I don't recall her having this, but I did drop RoV 13 episodes in so perhaps I missed it.
Shonen is for little kids then
>13 episodes in so perhaps I missed it.
Memes aside you didn't miss anything of vlaue. Alain is the only good part of the show and some moments with Oskar and Versen but overall it's not a really good show and no amount of Dezaki direction can help it.
Watch Joe if you haven't it's the superior 70s anime.
No, I think the original Gundam is quite good on a vacuum but I don't want to open the Tomino derail pandora box.
Well yeah. Don't let the sperging manchildren on the internet fool you into thinking otherwise.
The best '70 TV anime is Lupin the III
I've seen Joe and it's indeed magnificent.
I don't get why you're laughing. A far as thematic depth is concerned, Naruto runs circles around the most praised Shoujo series. The only reason you're unable to admit this is because you're a self-proclaimed contemporary feminist who believe that a story automatically gains in value for centering around emancipation or lesbian understones.
The start of the manga feels more childish as you'd expect from a 70s shoujo manga, but it gets more emotional as the story progresses. André and Oscar catching the bad guys didn't interest me as much as Oscar's love for Fersen and her loyalty to her queen. Also this reminds me that I still need to read those side stories Ikeda wrote years later.
>A far as thematic depth is concerned, Naruto runs circles around the most praised Shoujo series
lmao
>you're a self-proclaimed contemporary feminist
This is fucking gold
>emancipation or lesbian understones
There are none of those in RoV
Take your (you) you made my day by calling me a femminist
>there is no emancipation in RoV
lmao
>Naruto runs circles around the most praised Shoujo series
Honestly the melodrama in naruto and rov aren't too far from each other cringe wise
