I have such mixed feelings on witch watch. On one hand the art is so pleasant and pretty and the girls are so cute but it's just such a nothing series and story
it's like an inferior version from all aspect of what made sket dance good.

to iterate from this, i see witch watch as the gag manga like sket dance was but the characters are more like what astra last in space was, in a sense in has less interaction with background characters compared to sket dance in which each chapter dealt with the gang having interaction with many of their friends, so there's more variety of storytelling that can be made depending the weird shenanigans the gang could have (either meeting with the stuco, or meeting their weirdo friends). also that's what i also felt when sket dance's quality seemed to be declining when they entered their final year at HS. it's like they met less people because they were concentrated with each of their own future, so not much story to tell, and godamn the successor arc was painful to read at. none of the new kids were particularly likable right until the end.
in a way, I can see why the author sees witch watch as a hodgepodge of various things he likes as shown in . but honestly it just doesn't have a charm like sket dance was. you can see most of the gag only comes from Nico misusing her magic and it'll take the rest of the chapter figuring how to undo that. and suddenly there'll be come some serious arc that just feels jarring to read, and suddenly they become friend. and back again with some gag chapters that more often that not falls flat into its comedy, like the chapter about someone making manga, like who the fuck reads all of that? like is that meant to be parodying HxH's wall of text.
