He was no longer needed and he had a whole bunch of targets on his back so he exited the stage in a way that didn't damage Reinhardt in any way.
Whether it was planned or not who knows, but it was probably the best way it could've played out for his goals.

he knew his life work was tied to the rise of Reinhardt and that Reinhardt was basically dead, so he better die, because no other leader will keep up with his levels of autism.

His fate wasn't all that upsetting, what really upset me was Reuenthal's arc, he just played along with the accusations like a puppet on a string, and then got yeet'd by some treacherous cowards.

Obserstein was the real villain all along.
>gets Goldilocks to let a world get nuked instead o participating in glorious battle
>Oberstein gives him an assistant who feeds Goldilocks and makes his tea
>Goldilocks develops a mysterious illness which gradually impairs him more and more almost as if poison were building up in his system
>Oberstein runs roughshod over the Empire, treating it like his personal fiefdom
>Politicians Oberstein appoints to power coincidentally have ties to the church's terrorists
>civil war's caused with the heterochromatic hero trying to save the Empire from Oberstein
>Oberstein nearly causes another civil war by arresting an admiral
>Oberstein acts like he has the right to block others from seeing Goldilocks
>routinely does whatever he wants while lying to other people that it's Goldilocks will
>relies on Goldilocks poison-induced weakness to wear him down in each conversation and argument
>last Terra-ist bombers somehow gain access to the Emperor's compound but accidentlly assassinate Oberstein after the Emperor switches rooms
>Obserstein wanted the war to continue

watch the series with the interpretation Oberstein's a traitor who sees the Empire as his and conspired with the Terra-ists while poisoning the Emperor and everything fits.

I think there's two ways you can see Reuenthal's arc. One is that it was a chance for him to go out on his own terms, to try and fulfill some of what he thought should have been his destiny. If not for Reinhard he would've been the greatest man of the era, his actions would have defined the age he lived in. It was simply misfortune he was born into the same time as Reinhard. So his reaction to being implicated for treason was almost relief, because then he could finally resolve this anxiety over his own potential by striving against Reinhard, really trying to beat him, for the first time.

Another way to look at it is that Reinhard had been blue balled by the untimely death of Yang Wen-Li and denied a fitting climax to his conquest of the Galaxy. So, Reuenthal saw the scheme ensnaring him as a way to fulfill his own desires (to test himself against Reinhard) and the Kaiser's (giving him a battle worthy of his ambitions). However talented Reinhard was at politics and administration, he was a warrior at heart and once all his battles were done, his spirit faded. Reuenthal might've wanted to reignite that spark in him.

I dunno, he's a complicated man. Whatever the case, I don't think he was "trapped" into doing what he did. He was smart enough, and valued enough by Reinhard, to escape, but he chose not to.

facts

Bruh, you don't need to speculate the series tells you explicitly. We hear his internal thoughts and monologue.

Having to beg the Emperor's forgiveness is too disgraceful for him. He has too much pride to grovel before the Emperor over something he didn't do. Likewise, the Emperor insists Reunthal come to him, he won't be lowered in station by going to a vassal.

Each man knows there's a risk of interference by third parties and here's another fundamental division
Emp:convinced his power's absolute and he can guarantee Reuenthal's safety.
R: Knows Obserstein's running the show and would assassinate him before he ever reached an audience with the Emperor.

The compromise R seeks is to declare his war not against the Emperor, and thereby weaken the polity, but rather against Oberstein (who needs removed) and thereby offer the Emperor and option to stay out of it, treat it as a feud between subordinates he's allowing, rather than get the Emperor involved.

Reinhard fucks-up and sides with Oberstein, ultimately trusting him and choosing him over Reunthal. This's a source of much misfortune.

KAKKA KAKKA KAKKA KAKKA

But it made sense I'd say. His purpose ended with Reinhard dying.

Unsettling.
