Angel's Egg is pretty underrated imo

gankutsuo didn't really remain in the general sphere of conversation

Despite the future setting I hear it's the most faithful adaptation of the book.

expected a boring action show with dusty color palette
ended up with pure awe due to sheer ridiculousness of yugo's tard power that genuinely kept me on my seat from the start to finish.

It's kinda iffy, but every other adaptation is so looose it pretty much wins by default. Monte Cristo's a pretty long book, and they keep trying to cram it all into feature-length movies. Gankutsuou has 26 episodes and it still skips the entire first half of the book.
