I know nothing about shogi so I believe you completely and unconditionally
I like chess, but I rarely really play it and am not very good at it. I would love to play D&D or something like that because I've never before, but I don't really have anyone to play with

Why? The Indian is objectively a better opening that allows for better power projection in the center towards the midgame. You might as well not even play if you're going to open with the sicilian anytime past 1985

If I had friends with, I would. I used to play a ton of Catan and Monopoly in high school. I keep picking up chess but am too lazy to get really good at it like I would like to be.
