No such thing as perfection, but I care a lot more about how memorable and personally impactful a show is than other, more objective traits. Kanon is the closest thing to that for me: it's bittersweet more often than not, but its kind of wintry comfort is something I can't get enough of in fiction. I've got other personal 10s like Clannad (After Story), K-On! (S2), Nanoha (A's), Madoka and so on, but Kanon's the one that's nearest and dearest to me despite being way more flawed than most of the 9s I've ever given.

Emotional manipulation doesn't make something good. You having some shitty memory or bias that relates to the series doesn't make it good. You are operating on the brain of a teenager.

Not him but it should be obvious that audiovisual media that forgo stuff like good writing in every meaning of the word and good technical presentation in favor of invoking emotions in the audience are objectively shit. People, who were not impacted hard enough, will without any bias only see how shitty a thing actually is. This happens a lot on Any Forums, especially in threads about older shows. I am not saying that something can't be well made and emotional at the same time, by the way. >inb4 samefag Can't be helped.

I was reacting to a post which claims that art should make you feel emotions, implying that it's the only worthwhile aspect that makes art good. I don't know about graphic art and maybe music to some extent but it's clearly not the case with movies and books.

Anime is an entertainment medium. The first thing you should be thinking about is to have fun with it, not what you would write on your MAL review. It's totally fine to value your personal enjoyment over other "objective" aspects. Objectivity in doesn't exist in criticism.

>Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust literally just a generic vampire story why do you like it so much?
