They did ruin the game AND the anime.

It's because of the increasing complexity of the card games. Even if you know how to play the irl game, the quality of the episodes decreased in half compared to DM / GX when Synchros++ were introduced and the game started focusing more and more on spam special summoning and lengthy effects.
There's only so much the writers can do when you must waste so much time of the episode talking about how you discard X to special summon Y and if you have Z in your graveyard you also summon Etc.. from somewhere else.... and then keep doing a couple more plays like that.
Too many effects are activated in the 20 episodes of 5ds I watched, every summoned card does something they don't use normals. The kid with green hair using Deformers / Morphotronics is a good example, no single card he summons WONT activate some text chain where I just roll my eyes waiting for it to finish because it feels superfluous, usually just rolling dices or drawing cards to set up something else.
Same for Zexal. Vrains is probably unwatchable.

I don't believe their stories are necessarily bad (though they kinda are, the entire society starts being futuristic crap that revolves around cars games with zero traces of reality) , but there's a lot less leeway for good characters and story when compared to DM / GX.
Also the duels in the OG two series felt much more like a direct representation of the character. PEGASUS AND HIS TOONS. The dueling itself shows his personality. We got 3-5 episodes of pure dueling, but the cards being played were the character himself.
Jonouchi? All about luck. His deck and duels show you his character, a rough guy with weak cards trying to overcome the odds. Judai and superheroes. Etc.. they become more generalized starting from 5ds and onwards, personality is lost in the sea of effects and plays they're making.

Spin-offs tend to decline in quality, because they're derivative by nature.

I somehow have nostalgia for 5ds but I didn't watch the anime and I disliked it when I tried to watch it this 2020 right after DM and GX.
5ds is far too different.

I had nostalgia for it because I played the ds and tag force games as they came out, and I remember stardust & black rose dragon being very expensive cards we all wanted irl.
So I have nostalgia for it, but no the anime is crap. Tried to watch it in 2020,and then this December 2021, but I don't like it. DM and GX stood the test of time way better, you can appreciate them as these fun 90/2000s series even if you don't know the card game, but someone who isn't into the card game would tune out with the combos of 5ds, tons of math and special summoning. I guess that's why 5ds usually ranks so high as the #1 favorite of the fans, it's usually fans of the card game who can follow these turbo duels with Jack doing red resonator shit and the enemy biker pulling out some bomber combo at 300 words per minute

I found a lot more people liked 5D's at the time cause it was dark edgy and very serious, Any Forums hates GX for example but adored 5D's

personally I hated 5D's ever since it came out, the core idea of motorcycles and card games was retarded by design and lacked any selfawearness, smt the previous had at times, also I wanted more GX at the time and not that tryhard dystopian sci-fi shitpost with unlikable characters and DOMA 2.0 plot

GX was the parody-sequel, having a very comical tone and a Duel academy with incompetent teachers and students forming cults, but ironically to me 5ds and onwards feel like an actual parody of Yugioh with how card games start dictating everything and somehow you get intergalactic wars of people weaponizing card duels in a way more ridiculous than GX could ever hope for.

GX was only that for s1, s2 onward it gets progressively serious and with s3 you are in a literal isekai hell with a suicide squad of Judai'esque characters trying to stop mindbroken Judai from genocideing the world... s4 was very satifying as far as finals go in YuGiOh with some amazing throwbacks and very well made character drama that remained consistent
