Why did this scene upset the anime community so much?

MacKenzie was such a shitty pilot. She only won because it was a gundam and could tank a fuckton of damage before wildly spraying 30mm rounds into a lightly armored Kampfer that would have trashed anyone else.

Not true. Asuka was (unknowingly) protecting Gendo and Gendo winning would have been the worst possible outcome. If anything, Robin demonstrated advanced understanding of the series.

We honestly have no idea how Gendo’s plan differs from SEELE’s. Just that Gendo wanted to be with Yui.
Though ultimately SEELE was happy with the outcome that happened, before Shinji reversed it.

But he doesn’t call them good guys. The point of the scene is that you the audience thinks their the good guys, that’s the joke.
