Because unless you want to write a story about how one of them is completely superior to the other, you would need to understand how war actually works, how weapon systems work, how logistics work, and you would also need to create a magic system that would be able to stand up to modern technology without feeling like magic is nerfed by the author to be ineffective or by the characters just not using it in ways that it would obviously be used in a war. Oh, and then the tech side would also not need to be retards and actually learn how to deal with magic and how to protect themselves from it.
