Actually, Elfen Lied was actually intended to be less edgy. Okamoto wanted to write a darker Love Hina with a mix of suffering and odd humor, while the editor wanted sci-fi, gore and random decapitations. The editor wanted to kill off Nana early and veto any focus on Nozomi past her introduction chapters, so Okamoto made fakeout deaths for Nana only to have her be the only diclonius to survive in the end, and went behind the editor's back to publish a special chapter fully dedicated to Nozomi in a side magazine.

Was the intro to chapter 1 ever explained? I remember reading what I thought was the end with them fighting Loki or whatever the giant alien thing in the city was called but I don't remember if it explained protag choking her out in the flash-forward part.
