I like the manga, but can't stand the execution of Brotherhood.

The original anime was a mess in terms of its filler and having to make up its own wonky ending, but I thought it was infinitely better in terms of overall direction, atmosphere, and tone. I won't deny that I probably have rose-tinted glasses for it by comparison though.

I love when thought provoking anime isn't afraid to get silly at some point. Levity is important to balance deep stuff.

I recently rewatched 2003, it holds up incredibly well except for the ending, that shit was wack.

Maybe seeing tons of praise for the better part of a decade before finally reading it caused my expectations to be a bit too high, but I didn't find the manga to be the masterpiece everyone says it is. It was consistently "great" but never reached beyond into "masterpiece" territory, whereas other highly acclaimed manga like Berserk, Vinland Saga, and Vagabond did at points.

FMA is a kiddie anime and it is overrated, but it’s that doesn’t mean it can’t also be deep and thought provoking. It’s a shounen first and foremost, but its world and characters are treated with a lot of care
