Does he deserve the praise he gets?

Yes.

No. Next Question.

Yes. He is good at being realistic and sincere when it comes to portraying depression. His work is brutally honest and shows he has delt with it before and he should be praised for that openess and sincerity.

No. He is a bullshit sci-fi writer.

He did before Rebuild.

Who?

Not particularly, no.

Yoshiyuki Tomino

He will die next

Yes. Say what you want about the rebuilds, he at least tried to make an anime people think about afterwards.
Most garbage nowadays just have the intent of leveling up your dopamine for a short amount of time.

This pretty much.

Short answer? Yes

Longer answer? Yes because he somehow took the core of depression, that gnawing feeling and made it kino. He felt it and knew how to portray it into a media form.

But what do i know, i'm a fag

If we're talking strictly about his work?
Yes
If we're talking about the man himself?
No fucking way
He's an insufferable faggot who managed to create, write, and direct some of the most influential anime to have ever come out, he hates his fans, trolls, takes forever with projects and seems to have a depression once every 5 goddamn years.

Just realized he looks exactly like my cousin but Asian
Also no

If the depression just went away it wouldn’t be depression.

When you understand the rebuilds deconstruct ALL anime, things make more sense.
I can understand expecting a 1:1 remake of the originals with better visuals and being disappointed.
I like how he cares enough to criticize the anime addicts. Yeah people cry because he doesn't just do what autists tell him and actually takes the piss on them, but I appreciate the very needed aspect of introspection he represents in anime.

He gets praise? All I've ever seen is him being shitted on around here for some reason.

For better or worse, he's responsible for a property that really spoke to my soul, and got me into anime in the first place, showing me that there was a place for more serious stories in an animated medium.

I used to be apathetic to him at first, but learning about him with some of the new rebuild movies and other stuff, I'm starting to think he might not be such a bad guy.

I think the brutality with how he shows the depths of despair, where there is realistic blame on the characters for not crawling out of the hole they're in, is what lets me know that he's not just talking out of his ass; he's lived it.

I don't like how sometimes his cutthroat, breakneck directing style leaves little room for interesting moments, and I don't like how sometimes the ONLY things allowed to happen are things that pertain to the core message he's trying to convey. Despite this, I can't help but like his stuff.

There's probably people who find him overrated, but I don't really have any reason to be against him.

No, he's a completely self-absorbed manchild.

Then life got better for him and the core of Eva became

Anno lives within his own small little world where he thinks his experiences represent the truth of all reality.

What aspects of his works portray, or at least channel depression? I've only suffered through the first half of his filmography, so perhaps this element is only present in the stuff I skipped like Shiki-Jitsu and the Rebuilds? His animated works to me give off the impression he's a man obsessed with otaku interests rather than anything of substance such as the struggle against one's own inner darkness.
I'd love to see examples of what you guys are talking about.

Did you skip NGE and EoE?
Also yes it is also very present in Shiki-Jitsu.

>lol get a job life's totally better

Midwit detected

I skipped EoE but not NGE.I didn't care for the original TV anime thus never bothered with anything else in the franchise.
If it's an element present in that particular film would such themes originate from Anno given it's an adaptation?
