Fact: Azumanga Daioh would have been forgotten if Tomo had not in fact saved the show. The rest of the cast is not strong enough as a unit to support a timeless masterpiece. Only when Tomo causes a scene or initiates a conflict does the rest of the cast have something to react to or play off of, thus contributing to the majority of the comedy and development for the series at large. Did you really want to see a boring, easygoing version of the trip to the beach (which wouldn't have happened unless Tomo brought everyone along to Chiyo's mansion) instead of the hilariously outrageous sequence that is the Key Scene? I don't think so. Tomo is an icon who cannot be replaced, and her influence on the genki archetype as well as a multitude of genres that employ similar characters cannot be understated.
