YKK, Haibane Renmei, Sora no Woto, Girls Last Tour, Kinos no Tabi
Does anybody else love these kinds of series, a slice of life/journey in a melancholic world. Something about finding beauty and meaning in the little things or mundanity in an otherwise hopeless world just really resonates with me. I can't get enough of atmospheres like that.
I know all these series are different but I'm sure there are people like myself that are fans of them all. What is it about these kinds of series that gets you?
YKK, Haibane Renmei, Sora no Woto, Girls Last Tour, Kinos no Tabi
Most of your examples aren't hopeless worlds.
These kinds of series generally aren’t very plot heavy but a lot of them nonetheless have too little going on or have too dull a cast to be truly great. Kino has a boring design and personality to match, girls last tour has an interesting world but you have to experience it through two generic moeblobs and while haibane renmei has a great cast the plot - like all abe works - is too far up it’s own ass to give a satisfying conclusion. That’s why ykk will forever be the pinnacle of this kind of series, great cast, interesting world and actual story progression without ever needing to get dramatic.
I like all of those, I've seen them recommended as similar to GLT, but there's nothing quite like it. I don't know why none of the others had the same effect.
SSR, SnW and YKK are all in one way or another dying worlds
It's definitely the bleakest of the bunch. There's also the element of isolation that isn't really present in the others, it could be that
It's funny you say that, because it's the only one the OP mentioned that I don't care for.
>generic moeblobs
The earnestness of the girls in contrast with the world is what gives life to the series, without a character like yuu there it would be too depressing
i think its different for everyone what resonates with them just like with all things
best dying world and best girl
i love the show, but i wouldnt put it in the same category
I loved the first few episodes and the one on the island but most of the ones where they predated the first episode weren’t all that interesting imo, especially the time loop ones
One of my favourite things about Any Forums is how we have this thread a few times a year whenever anons come independently to the conclusion that there's a very vaguely defined post-apocalyptic subgenre in Japanese fiction. Although I think this might not be the first thread OP makes about it.
the theme song gets stuck in my head all the fucking time
Yeah, it's my most favorite kind of anime. Also Mushishi kind of fits, or maybe Houseki no Kuni, at least the beginning of it.
This is my first time making a thread about, but I've definitely been in others before
Mono no Aware.
It's called
I love all of those, but still haven't seen Sora no Woto. Is it actually as good as the others?
I agree that YKK is the best, but the others aren't as bad as you're making them out to be. Haibane Renmei has a pretty easy to grasp plot, and Chito and Yuuri might not be the deepest characters of all time but they more than get the job done, especially towards the end of the manga. And even though Kino is mainly a vessel for the viewer to explore the world of the show, her philosophies on life do shine through and color the show in an interesting way.
Sora no Woto is an odd one and I could totally see people disliking it even if they like the others. It's a bit more cutesey with it's A1 pictures character designs and dialogue which can put people off, but it has this really meaningful underside I find that shines through in some episodes and kind of recontextualises all the more happy fun times. It's a lot less like Haibane and more like K-on mixed with girls last tour if that makes any sense. It also has one of the best soundtracks ever
No, it's not. For two reasons: mono no aware is by definition a feeling and doesn't work when applied to the object that evokes the feeling itself, it would be as if we said Aria is a "iyashi" anime instead of iyashikei. Secondly, saying it's *just* mono no aware doesn't work as an apt desciption since you can have both mono no aware works that don't specifically feel like they'd belong with what OP was talking about, and viceversa. Respective examples of which would be Frieren and Totsukuni no shoujo.
>I love all of those, but still haven't seen Sora no Woto. Is it actually as good as the others?
It's Haibane Renmei done right.
Heck, even Aria does mono no aware.
Stop posting this meme, they're totally different
But Haibane Renmei is already done right + it has ABe character designs and not generic 2010s anime girls.
This, generic 2000s anime girls are totally different.
ABe's got a distinct artstyle and isn't generic. Even if it was a generic artstyle though, it still would be better, because you're right: generic 2000s anime girls are better.
I do much prefer the Abe designs. That being said Rio is basically Reki but in 2010 form, and I like how she looks.
