That's not true. The reason its popular is fans of light novels, and shounenshit for that matter, will praise literally any garbage no matter its quality. Members of this group with some self awareness but not enough to watch real anime are the only ones claiming "anime has gone to shit lately".

The light novel fans give it a headstart but the majority of the anime community are anime onlies. Counting only the light novel fans wouldn't be enough popularity for it to be considered the best anime of 2021, they need to convince the hyperiders to spread the popularity. Since there was hardly anything else hyped going on, they latch onto what's relatively above the others already. So it's pretty much my point, the light novel fans give it a boost compared to other shows for hyperiders to join in.

Aside from the animation production value of course, which is wasted on a shitty light novel. There's little to nothing good about the story.

What do they watch it for then? They're good because they're different. if it's shit like Isekai, mushuko tensie is the best it gets. There was also stuff like Nomad and Vivy. Mushuko isn't even considered even the best by non-isekaifags. Attack on titan is way more popular.

OK, the character growth and development is well done, characters are multifaceted and flawed, the world is more thought out than the standard Isekai, or anime in general, it presents clear and consistent themes, it has high production values. there are a few things.

nta and don't hate on the show, but what do you mean that the world is fleshed out? the only real differenct is that that world is a cube with a reign on each face, but everything else is standard jrpg fantasy with magic circle, elves, dwarves and same aesthetic as other isekais

Fucking Piccolo from that generic shounenshit had more growth than the characters from Mushoku Tensei, Rudeus' barely existing redemption arc is nothing special. Also, almost all the male characters are shallow perverted assholes, with few the author wants to excuse as having a good side. The only exception is Ruijerd, who's relatively likable but he's only the best character because everyone else is so terrible. Throw him into random battle shonen and he'd look really typical. Oh and don't get me started on the villains, all of which so far in the anime are generic rapists to make the protagonist look relatively better.

You're inability to get past the characters being morally flawed does not make them bad characters, and unlike wanting to take over the world being a shallow perverted asshole is something you actually see in many men, which makes it a bit more believable as a flaw.
