desu I don't think it's possible to get this show without understanding all the deep cyberpunk shit in the 90's it builds on. I'd recommend reading Cyberia by Rushkoff for a good rundown. It's even referenced in the show.

It's similar to the plot of the movie Matrix:

>Lain gets computer
>Starts researching conspiracy theories
>Starts noticing she's being followed, strange glitches in world, etc.
>Eventually realizes she's not the real world
>Commits suicide to escape it

>you have to read a book to understand a fucking anime...
maybe it completely worths it and Lain becomes my favorite piece of media by doing this, but no, i would never do that shit.
i dont care that much

I watched it for the first time two years ago, let me break it down into hilariously infantile points:

>Lain discovers the internet.
>The anime then becomes about identity, she splits between various different Lains, like her online identity vs real one
>The anime goes on with this for a while as it progressively drops more hints about Lain being artificial.
>The anime starts making Lain and the viewer question what's real or valid.
>Lain detaches from the world and becomes an observer.

>deep cyberpunk shit in the 90's it builds
what typa shit do u mean

Average arch user

So you've been into pretentious bullshit for 17 years...fascinating...

Guy tries to take over humanity by connecting everyone's brain to a wireless network in which he is god. There are a lot of psychological thriller elements in it which make the show really good if you like that particular genre. And also a lot of questioning about the role of such technology in human society. You don't need to be a genius or even smarter than average to get it. Then again most people in this shithole website are retards so i guess i shouldn't be surprised if they feel insecure by their inability to understand it and they need to label it as "pretentious" to double down.

This anime helped me to delete all my social media. feels good.

Wasn't the end that she is a God and she removes memories of her existing from everyone, but at the end she meets her ex friend?
