I wish there was more of it, it makes characters more unique. There are more than enough j-pop ikemen, I rather have some beards sometimes.
I don't even think they make the characters uglier. Olruggio for example is great, it only makes him look a bit more hobo but in a good way.
Sometimes it can also help making a character look slightly older since it seems that many artists have trouble with that. I am not a huge fan of 30+ year olds that look like 16.

Authors should be brave like Oda and draw characters with stylish and dumb facial hair on super strong characters (Whitebeard).

I feel like it works as part of Olruggio's character, especially once you see him without it and how clean shaven he looks twelve. 100% he grew it to look like an adult.

Golden Kamuy pretty much follows the rule that if the character doesn't have weird or distinct facial hair, eyes or scars, they're fodder. I think it's a smart way to make the characters distinguishable.

I was happy when I realized how popular this series was getting because of this. Guy has everything that shouldn't resonate with typical female fans. He is unusually old for an anime character, already married, has a daughter and he has a beard and yet now he is one of the most popular characters for female anime fans ever. This shit is still getting an unholy amount of doujinshi every year even ten or so years later.

Well it's not my theories but rather the theories of many of those that produce anime and, to a part, observation. I non insignificant part of the fujos I know or see are still into feminine twinks even in their late 20s/early 30. Others have moved on and got a more interesting or varied taste. It might all simply be a question about what series are featuring though. If there are never any bearded guys there can't be a fanbase for them, simple as that.

A problem I have with many manga and anime is that the design doesn't reflect the personality. The series introduces a guy as depressed hobo, but he looks like a super model with make-up and fancy clothes. That's usually not how it works and I prefer designs that tell you about what kind of personalities these characters have.
