As long as the characters and their romance is cute and/or interesting, who cares. Just don't try to give me that "undertones" shit that people desperate for yuri but unwilling to read actual yuri works try to push. It's even worse than the whole series being will-they-or-wont-they, because at least those have a confession at the end. I'll accept the confession being symbolic, but it still needs to be obvious.

90% of the time, undertones are added because the author wants to tell a yuri story but can't because waifufags usually won't buy the series if it's 100% confirmed.

Why are all these characters always so braindead? They have like 4 archetypes between them and speak in extremely basic language so their mentally calcitrant viewers don't get overwhelmed by the presence of an actual conversation.

To be honest, I think it's more that they can get money from the people who know their yuri works without needing to follow through. As one movie I watched last year showed, you can get about two steps shy of girls fucking on-screen and have them talk about their futures together while in reverse cowgirl, but as long as you don't say they're dating, it's commercially viable.
