The only narrative purpose of this character was to show that Ichigo is struggling mentally and to keep some characters outside of fake Karakura. Being both supposedly strong and a huge jobber from the very beginning simply works well for that.

I've watched obscure animated shorts from 60s like Yoji Kuri's entire catalogue and read many alternative manga/gekiga published in GARO. Bleach is still better.

It’s actually become my favorite reveal over the years, mostly because how it feels like it was something kept in Kubo’s pocket by him addressing himself as Arrancar instead of Espada and the backseat he took after Ichigo got in Hueco Mundo.

It was the worst reveal because Sado, Ishida and Renji didn't get a single major win in that arc. This also forever relegated Chad to fodder status.

Personally, I think Orihime, Uryu, and Chad should've teamed up to fight him. Like Orihime is able to create giant shields that can block Yammy's attacks, Chad becomes strong enough to overwhelm Yammy's physical strength, and Uryu shows a glimpse of the antithesis.

But Rukia wasn't relegated to jobber status forever, mostly because of that big win (or you could call it a draw). That win secured her future. Ishida also had potential because an arc that focused on Quincy was on the making. Sado had nothing left to do, which wouldn't have been the case if he awakened his hollow abilities in the fight against Yammy 10. Chad even got relegated to the background in Fullbring arc, despite being a major focus in the earlier parts of the arc.
