First, a willingness to watch the classics with the same passion as watching a modern show. The reverse also applies- you have to be willing to watch newer shows with the same appeal as older shows if you're a pre-2000fag.
Second, a willingness to step outside your comfort zone and watch genres you don't typically like.
Third, a willingness to read the source material- manga, Light Novel, Web Novel, Visual Novel, whatever
Finally, it doesn't matter what you watch- in fact, even if you and I watch the same shows and have the same opinions, you have to understand that my taste will always be superior to your taste.

When you've been an anime fan for years and you watch every piece of crap seasonal garbage just to keep up with trends and epic memes, and you still haven't watched something as basic as Ashita no Joe, then you have a problem.

Basically it's a power move, I use ashita no joe to give myslef cred because even though I've seen so little anime (140) one of those anime is AnJ.
