The English version is shit. Blame the companies who dubbed anime back in the 90s, never trust an American with dragon ball or DIGIMON.
In the rest of the world it's agreed it looks a bit cheaper than Z but it's still the official ending to the dragon ball franchise, everyone can sing the songs or tell you they cried with the finale.
Also it's written with the same tone as DB and Z, while Super is aimed at little kids and it has a different writer (Toriyama 25 years later is just senile and thinks dragon ball = Dr slump)

As much as we complain about Toyotaro, he's merely following the ideas Toriyama gives him and his style of work, even when Toyotaro comes up with original ideas Toriyama is the one who has to approve it.
The Toyotaro from the early 2000s knew what made dragon ball so good, AF was accepted as a nice continuation to GT and Z because it kept the tone.

GT has purpose, it's not a cashgrab. Tells you the story of the characters a decade later and even an epilogue after their death. If anything it put a hard end to the franchise.

GT, even as an attempt to capitalize on Z's popularity, still tried to finish the story. A lot of the shit that happened there, like Baby and the evil dragons gave some sense of catharsis to some of the unsaid stuff in the series, such as the saiyans being genocidal assholes and the dragon balls being used to deprive death of meaning. The final episode of GT feels like an actual farewell, a "welp, that's it, thank you for sticking with us for so long."
Super can't do that, compared to GT it feels like the story of some cheap mobile game, with stronger aliens appearing just because.

I always consider GT to be Dragon Ball, just in a way smaller scale despite it becoming cosmic.
Like, it gives you the mystery of exploring a new world (space) just like the original (world) did, for like 10eps or so before they come back to Earth.
In that time, they try to make them have more fun, unlike Z where it was mostly srs bzns from the beginning till Buu, where it got kinda goofy again.
And after they come back to Earth, it's a fightfag festival, kinda like the end of Dragon Ball where Goku fights Picollo.
I don't know how to say it correctly without my ESL becoming more apparent.
