You're almost there, I'd say somewhere between episode 12-15 (leadup to Amlitzer/battle) it really starts to get good, and by the end of the 1st season (eps 20-26) the show hits its full stride. A lpt of the first season is worldbuilding and character development, so the second half of the first season >>> the first half

It's a fantastic show, but it is a slow buildup at first. Imo the payoff is worth it, and seasons 2-3 are some of my favorite anime of all time. Season 4 is also good, but only half of the arcs are on par with S2-3.

LotGH is actually worth the praise it gets though and it's honestly overhated on this board at this point because half of the anons here want to be le enlightened contrarian faglords and shit on good yet (on Any Forums) popular shows to gain a sense of superiority. LotGH is not some lowbrow Wan Piss trash and it's not unwatchable pseud wankery either. If you like shit like Lord of the Rings or other epic fantasy, it's worth the somewhat slow ramp-up to get the payoff.

It's what the story is supposed to be because it's much more faithful to the novels compared to the 80s OVA series. For that reason it's significantly weaker because the OVA series changed and added tons of anime only content to improve the novels. At least the new adaptation has been consistently getting better.

The only consensus is that the character designs are a gay downgrade. Although you can get used to most of them, seeing what they did to the manlier characters like Reuental or Schenkopff really hurts.
Content wise I think it's fine if you want to revisit the story, but it will forever live under the shadow of the OVAs autistic amounts of worldbuilding.
Production values are nice and the sci-fi elements feel more authentic for the current standards.
OST is Sawano instead of classical music so I guess it's a trade-off, but each have their merits. I really love some of the songs

The music is worse overall, but not bad. The character designs are way worse. Everything else is fine though, so I mostly like it. Some of the things the OVA added are fucking retarded (space axes) so it being more faithful to the novels is a plus.
