Yes. All respectable series have a ton of fanfics that try to "fix" canon endings. Some are even published in the countries that don't give a shit about copyrights.
I can remember at least five unofficial continuations and rewrites of LOTR and Silmarillion published in my country. The most famous one was written by some chick who read Silmarillion, got butthurt that Tolkien universe has clear "good" and "evil" races and switches them places. It created a lot of drama in fan community in early 2000s and spawned at least two novel-size "fix-it" fanfics written by the people who hated it.
