I refuse to believe panels like these are him play-acting for some grand fake-out. It would destroy any characterization from the Reiss Caverns. Was he pretending with Falco? When he spoke about moving forward? What of his composure when facing Reiner? Was that not character development? The future he saw, why ask Reiner why his mother died? When did he see that? Why force that down the reader's throat in 139 when it was such a crucial plotpoint? Was he pretending with Hange? Pretending with Mikasa and Armin? Pretending to fight Reiner? His anger towards Fritz-through-Frieda? His homage to Kruger? His declaration after receiving the founder's power, which would make the past-present-future he saw in 139 be with him in that moment yet he still made the declaration? What's the big idea? You have to consider the context of the world of SnK. For Paradis, the outside world has only existed for 4 years, and the vast majority of people haven't seen or interacted with it. All they know is that this world hates them and wants them dead, and that this world is responsible for the latest titan attacks. Other than a few military people, no one from the island has visited the continent. For the average Paradisian, the destruction of the world is no big deal. It barely mattered to them anyway. They probably couldn't even conceive over a billion people.
