You do realize that eren seeks freedom above anything else right? Him doing a vow and forbidding his own people from being free of chosing their way of life is laughable.
Because Eren's character went from a sympathetic, radicalized freedom fighter who did what he thought was right and carried the burden that came with it, to a brainwashed "yeah Ymir kinda made me do it to snap out of her stockholm syndrome". It was unnecessary. It changed nothing. It ruined both Ymir and Eren. Look at the most recent episode; both Eren and Ymir are great, conflicting characters. If you want to pin-point a moment, THIS was the panel that killed the manga.
The writing had its problems, like everyone reacting to Annie so casually, and the whole "save the world" panel which simply didn't fit a manga like AoT. But those didn't ruin the story. Ruining the main character retroactively ruined the story entirely. The thematic significance of Eren felt watered down entirely.
