Admittedly it was a bit harsh, but before judging them too badly, it's important to consider the full historical context, the centuries of oppression and crimes against humanity, namely slavery, that lead to such outrage in the first place. If you and your people had been enslaved for hundreds of years, you'd be pissed off too. Not saying this to excuse or lessen the guilt of any war crimes, but it's important to consider.
