Galadriel hung her smallclothes on a rotten tree branch and it undulated wildly in the wind from the Rhun plain. Suddenly, there was a commotion in the bushes. Barefoot, she ran back to the camp and unsheathed her sword - runes dancing across the milky white blade.
A swarthy face popped up from the nearby hedge. "Ho! I'd never expect to see a knife-ears this deep in the Darkroot!"
Galadriel looked at the squat form approaching her. It looked like a bundle of dirty clothing ambulating on two giant feet, like those mummers used to wear in the meadhall of Nargothrond. "And who might you be" She called out.
"Well, I'm Noggo Harfoot, if it pleases m'lady" the bundle said, turning up leaves with his stick. "I smelled your campfire from miles, and I thought, Nog, you might find some tender roast here and lo and behold I have arrived."
The man - if it indeed was a man - was positively insolent, Galadriel thought. Suddenly she remembered she was naked as her name day beyond her habit. For the first time, she felt like she was in a sack, despite all the spells of Noldor embroidery woven into it. "And what makes you think you're welcome at my hearth, little master?" she called out with a trembling voice. She tried to pretend it was the cold wind that gave it its timbre.
There was a sharp crack, like a branch breaking. She felt something punch into the small of her back, and she fell prostrate on the frozen ground. There was a rush of stocky feet, and two more forms rushed forward, ropes in hand. "You didn't think I would travel alone, m'lady of the forest?" the elder Harfoot screwed up his eyes. No, see, we always travel in packs... and us Noggos always get our roast, one way or the other.
Night fell quickly after that, but it felt like it lasted a thousand years.
