You know what baffles me is if they wanted free reign to do whatever the fuck they wanted in the show without being constrained by lore, why not set it after LOTR? Tolkien wrote nothing about what happens past the 3rd age so you could freely make shit up.

He didn't write many specifics, but the broad strokes of established lore are very bad for any potential story. Magic and cool shit is a function of time in this universe and as time goes on everything gets more boring. The Elves and Wizards fuck off almost immediately, all of the rest of the fantastical elements and creatures fade away. The Reunited Kingdom enters a golden age and there are no major problems for a minimum of a few centuries until Aragorn's son dies.
The only stories you really could tell about this time period would be basically:
-Aragorn and Eomer curbstomping the darkies in the East and South.
-Some side story about exploration beyond the map (which would be more fun in an earlier era when there was more magic and cool stuff)
-Political drama in a purely human and almost magic-free setting after like 500 years when Aragorn's golden age ends.
