I’m unironically 99% sure that Villeneuve loved the Lynch movie as a teen and did not read the book until recently. The whole thing just seems like a tribute to the Lynch movie, and whenever he discusses the book in promo stuff he gets everything wrong and just describes the Lynch movie.
