I think the Howard Shore score for Fellowship is far better then the Bear McReary score for RoP, but the main theme Shore did for RoP sucks and McReary's stuff is far superior. Its very dreamy and romantic, much better than what I expected. The themes of Galadriel and the Stranger are the best.

because i dont root for any of the characters. maybe elrond but even that is weak. plus, the setting of hotd looks far more grounded with much more shots taken outside instead of a soundstage. and it has compelling drama, the scenes with the king and his daughter are bloody good. rop has nothing of that.
