I think it was the massive shift in narrative and plot elements in the show itself. The formula keeps being messed with and the obsession with explaining the cannon is what killed it. Moffat's endless high energy blink-and-you-miss-it plot twists became tiresome and companions became more important than the doctor. Audiences enjoy something that is consistent, something that they can rely on to give them a certain feel or mood when watching. Successful long running shows know this. But this show became so wildly unpredictable and unreliable that it alienated the majority of people.
