At least in the first two episodes it's setting up things.
In this particular scene a bunch of hobbit kids go with female Frodo and female Sam to eat some berries and then female Frodo sees a wolf track in the mud and leads them back to their camp and then the wolf appears and that's it.
I guess that wolf is going to appear in 1-2 episodes and not-Gandalf will save female Frodo from it or some shit like that.

So is there an over all plot? Just random shit going on? in LotR, Mordor is on the rise and Sauron is scanning for the one ring, the forces of good gotta come together and destroy said ring. Everything going on is towards that end.
