House of the Dragon is basically HBO's mea culpa for the last few seasons of GoT being such shit. They're back into their King's Landing political intrigue comfort zone, with the added bonus of dragons for added fantasy spectacle when needed, and actually have GRRM source material to work from again. It'll never be as big as GoT was in its heyday, but its quality is at least consistent.
On the other hand, Rings of Power just has Bezos sleaze all over it. There's no way Christopher Tolkien would have let this happen if he were still alive, and so it just feels like the vultures swooped in and started picking the franchise's bones before his body had even cooled, and they were probably circling for years. It just feels like one of the last few pure and earnest things in our culture being tainted by modern bullshit, and it's just really scummy to behold. You can also tell it was made by people who have no idea what life outside the city is like, especially in ye olden times. I shut it off when not-Frodo's inexplicably black mom is explaining how they're isolationists, and that the outside world is none of their concern, while the camera cuts to black and Asian not-Hobbits who could not have possibly sprung up in the same parts of the world. That's not how evolution works. Also, where did all the black and Asian Hobbits go in the Third Age?
