Tolkien's works aren't modern fantasy, they are the basis for it. The same liberties don't apply to middle earth that apply to all the other DnD schlock

yes and modern fantasy is a tweak of european folklore for modern audiences, a continuation. but if you added tanks and fighter jets while doing that tweaking, you would have left the genre behind. the same goes for adding sizeable communities of black people to not!europe. you can't do whatever and have it still be recognized as classic, tolkienesque rooted-in-northern-folklore fantasy

It’s loosely based on European folklore but much of Tolkien’s myth is was original. Particular the huge expansion of the elves and their culture which is largely mysterious in what little Norse folklore survived. He also wove in a bunch of Christian shit with his cosmology and just, over all, takes a lot of elements from European folklore but really does a lot of OC fanfiction with it too.
