the answer is obviously slashers. In the progression of cinema from "giving form to humanity's imagination" to "stock market algo," the slasher craze stands out as a time when repeatedly pushing the same pleasure button took over, and big-budget films dropped all pretense of originality.
Something similar happened with westerns, but the cultural differences are obvious. Westerns lived to express an important memory, or desire; a memory of heroism. Later, as in Italy, blood and gore became more central, but without the political backdrop. In America, there is a nihilistic violence. Lashing out at chaotic existence. Sure, some killers were inspired by slashers, but I despise them because the films were inspired by real killers, real hatred against your fellow man.
