He couldn't bare the ostracisation from the crew of the ship. In tight nit male environments where everyone's wellbeing and survival depends on trusting your colleagues to do their jobs properly, if you are not respected you will be bullied reletlessly until you either prove yourself or leave (or top yourself). You by no means have to be liked, just trusted to do your job, which Mr Hollom was not capable of.
He was almost 30 years old, and did not fit in with the much younger and more capable fellow midshipmen, nor was he an officer or one of the men. He was stuck in a uniquely lonely place. He was a failed officer candidate, something which Captain Aubrey saw when he tried to give him a lesson in leadership. Even he acknowledged that he had to go.
Suicide was the only honourable thing for him to do. Had he not done it, he would have eventually been murdered in his sleep.
