That is precisely my take on it. I have no problem with the guy's performance. Axtually, he seems to be pretty damned good, but I think I'd find it far less distracting if he were to actually just be bald. I mean, I can try to rationalize it as the quirky genetics of Valyrians, like maybe at some point a Summer Islander was taken as a wife and just like how the Baratheons always have black hair, the skin tone got caught up in the inherited traits, but that's a lot of headcanon to accommodate just one character. His House's most relevant trait in the books is that they are so paranoid about losing the purity of their bloodline and their aryan nature (pale skin with white hair and light eyes) that they only practice incest or marry close relatives to avoid diluting their Valyrian heritage. The idea of all of them looking like SS officers and then suddenly one of them looking like Idris Elba in a blonde wig is just terrible and breaks immersion so easily.

From the first episode it seems like having him be a black main character (along with his kids we quickly saw) was enough for them to check off their diversity box because everyone else we saw including the extras were white which is a good trade off especially compared to the new lord of the rings show.
