I found this movie to be somewhat of a disappointment. The way the movie moves from scene to scene is weird and jarring, the most notable example being when Amleth is at at the bottom of the volcano but then suddenly he's near the top with his shirt off covered in blood as if the fight already started and we didn't get to see it. Felt really weird.
The dialogue felt off as well, I wasn't into the slightly poetic, on the nose tone all the characters spoke in. It's disappointing because I thought The Lighthouse had great dialogue.
My biggest problem is just that I didn't find the movie to be immersive or visceral or authentic, which I know is weird to say considering Eggers' autism regarding historical accuracy but that didn't help the movie in this case. I think of a movie like Valhalla Rising, that movie was immersive and visceral in a way the Northman wasn't. You can have as much historical accuracy as you want but it's the filmmaking itself that immerses a viewer, and Northman just felt somewhat flat in tone for the most part.
I did like some scenes on their own, the Valkyrie in particular was beautiful, but the more I think about this movie the more I don't like it.
Maybe Eggers didn't know how to handle a film of this size, or maybe it was that studio meddling I heard about, I don't know.
I found this movie to be somewhat of a disappointment. The way the movie moves from scene to scene is weird and jarring...
It's degenerate incest fantasy written by Jews
I thought the historic accuracy was immersive, nothing worse to take you out of immersion when you see another viking with leather bracers or overuse of the so called shield maiden.
Historic accuracy isn't mutally exclusive to storytelling, both should be aspired to.
>buzzword buzzword I'm a fat libshit cunt buzzword buzzword buzzword buzzword buzzword buzzword
>Eggers' autism regarding historical accuracy
yeah fucking zombies soooo historically accurate lmao
It's accurate to the mythology of the time.
yeah but they went full retard with that scene movie can't decide if its a fantasy film or historical fiction the tone is a mess.
My only real issue with the film was the clash between fantastical elements and the otherwise mundane nature of the film's setting. I liked that there are certain magical elements that are completely unambiguous, like the sword not opening, but then there's the bit where he fights a draugr and then it snaps back like it was all a dream. I get that Eggers wanted to keep it realistic feeling but it was a bit jarring. I would've liked it better if they'd been a little less ambiguous.
I also wasn't a huge fan of how they tried to make the pagans look scary and savage. It's just another religious system, no need to go nuts.
It's cool if you treat it like a fairy tale.
You might actually be retarded if this was your problem and I thought the movie was mediocre.
Its meant to be one the epic sagas, a story told and embellished around a camp fire, I think that explains the fantastical elements.
I didn't have an issue with that bit, just that it's trying to seem ambiguous at points when it doesn't have to.
>incest fantasy
>main character clearly isn’t attracted to their mother and is disgusted by her later
Why are you retarded?
OP is a faggot and needs to stick to his weed, Rick and morty, and capeshit
>shirt off covered in blood as if the fight already started
He was bleeding when he arrived to the mountain, his shirt was soaked in his own blood from the wounds his mother and half brother caused -whoa, a metaphor.
>The dialogue felt off as well
Not enough quips, faggot?
>didn’t find the movie to be immersive or visceral or authentic
That’s because you’re a low test fag who couldn’t understand concepts like loyalty, love, honor, or pride.
does that also explain it being boring incoherent shit, Roger?
First ten minutes are 10/10
cheap art house crap
the hamlet from the '40s mogs this shit
Northman wishes it was an epic.
This movie had sterling costuming, love it.
this shit isn't art house
Ooooo I talk to a skull and tell the audience all the themes of the play and the entire plot to come ooooo so high brow
