Also they were a bunch of fragmented and isolated city states instead of one massive kingdom surrounded by smaller kingdoms who hated their guts and were just looking for an excuse to knock them down a peg, like the Aztecs.
The Aztecs were so universally despised that even fringe tribes in bumfuck Central America had heard of them, and knew enough to hate them. The Aztecs really were as comically and laughably evil as the Spanish portrayed them.
