They got the tippy toppest security clearance in the whole command structure, I'd expect them to get some leeway. Also being on the front lines probably helps. Look at some of the shit Patton said and got away with, (mostly subordinates, but I think he talked shit about superiors or peers too).

I can't find the article but it was by a colonel in the US army who was training some Muslim soldiers. He found that an American colonel had, essentially, the same command authority as a Muslim general. American doctrine has always revolved around lower officers being able to operate semi-autonomously in the field.
